Head of School Message

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to Sandford International School. At SIS, we are committed to “developing global citizens who have the confidence to pursue their dreams and positively impact on shaping the world around and beyond them”, offering a rigorous, relevant and holistic education.

The origins of Sandford International School can be traced back to the early 1940s when Mrs. Christine Sandford wanted to establish an English speaking school for her children. Christine Sandford was the wife of Colonel Sandford, Head of the British Military Mission to Ethiopia during World War II, who along with Cunningham and Wingate, led the British contingent dispatched to help Emperor Haile Selassie I and the Ethiopian army reclaim the country from 5 years of Italian occupation under Mussolini’s Government.

Sandford’s role has been unique in Ethiopia and in Africa. It was one of the first international schools in Africa for both nationals and expatriates learning on an equal basis and has been providing high quality education for the past 75 years.

Our school is first and foremost a place of learning where students feel safe and enjoy their education. There is an expectation that subject teachers ignite passion and a desire for learning allowing the students to thrive and flourish.

We seek to create an environment which is characterised by lifelong learning: opportunities; values; and making sure that every child really does matter. We provide and deliver a British curriculum through the formative years of a child’s education (early years and primary) establishing solid foundations to access the Key Stage 3 National Curriculum before taking Cambridge IGCSE examinations.

In Years 12 and 13 we deliver the International Baccalaureate Diploma course. As Head of School, I believe that in addition to the academic curriculum and outcomes, an education with character is just as important. Therefore, students are able to access a vast number of extra-curricular opportunities across the school, including student leadership, fundraising and charity events as well as a variety of high quality off site educational trips to worldwide destinations.

Together, we hold the future in our hands. “Carpe Diem
